I can't believe that the Soviet Union officers ordered suicide missions so readily. There were people without weapons running in and my is question whether they were trained in hand-to-hand combat; you need it if you're weaponless. It's just insane; I couldn't imagine being part of the Soviet Army at the time, especially when those who were retreating were shot by their own.
From what I've watched so far, there were no such thing as turning back - you either died or you won. There were not enough enough weapon and supplies to go around so every other soldier got rifles and the call was to pick up the weapons of those who had died. Every citizen in Stalingrad were evacuated in exchange for more troops and the movement of troops were brutal - locked into train cars so no chance of desertion.

I believe that the Japanese were similar to the Soviet Army in terms of savage tactics, but with more finesse and refinement in their planning. They fought for honor and Japan so they were not afraid to die and that helped their approach to war when it came to charging in at the enemy, but I believe the Japanese were more readily available with supplies and weapons. As for defeat and victory, it was victory, or seppuku and the beheadment of the enemy for their honor.
